A longtime federal fugitive who was an undocumented immigrant cost taxpayers more than $350,000 in healthcare at Miami-Dade hospitals before he died last year, a county investigative report has revealed. The Miami-Dade Office of the Inspector General said the patient was a Colombian who fled the United States in 1983 after a cocaine smuggling conviction but returned under a false name. In 26 visits to the Jackson Health System from 2003 through 2010, his care cost $201,716 — $155,334 in charity care paid by Miami-Dade taxpayers and $46,382 paid by Medicaid, the state-federal program for the poor. The man also ran up $163,734 in bills from other healthcare providers that were paid by Medicaid. (Source: Miami Herald) Note: When you question the status of a possible illegal alien online with the Ocala Star Banner, the online editor will promptly remove comments and scold anyone for asking the question. At least the Herald has the guts to write real stories about the real costs of illegal aliens.

LINK A panel charged with examining taxpayer funded hospital districts is mulling whether to develop a “bill of rights” so residents better understand how special districts work.  Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order in March directing the panel to look at several things, including whether the special districts that run public hospitals have had any Sunshine Law violations. There are 1,631 special districts in Florida, according to the Department of Community Affairs. These disticts approximately seventy different services, from health care to fire safety to water management.  There are 626 dependent districts, which are created by counties and municipalities and 1,005 independent districts created by the Legislature. All districts are governed by Florida statutes and must adhere to certain requirements, such as filing financial audits, complying with Florida’s broad public records laws and complying with ethics laws. Compliance with the Sunshine laws is not always the case.
LINK A new national rating indicates that Florida's elderly and disabled residents would be best off moving to Minnesota, Washington or Oregon, based on measurements of the quality and availability of help for people who need long-term care.

When drug dealers started disappearing from street corners earlier this year, Tampa police detectives thought something was going on. And when officers made traffic stops, they began noticing something odd. They were finding "massive amounts" of preloaded debit cards, along with ledgers and laptop computers, said Sgt. Terry Goff in an exclusive interview with The Tampa Tribune and News Channel 8. They soon uncovered what Goff said was an explosion of tax fraud that permeated the city's poorest neighborhoods and some of its most influential conclaves. Erstwhile street criminals were now using laptops and mailboxes to steal hundreds of millions of dollars by filing fraudulent tax returns with stolen Social Security numbers. Investigators believe Tampa is at the tip of a national trend that has created a hemorrhage of federal tax dollars. In a six-month period, Postal Inspector Doug Smith said his agents seized an estimated $100 million in fraudulent tax refunds destined for local mailboxes. And Police Chief Jane Castor said she thinks that number represents less than 10 percent of the total fraud. If Castor's estimate is close, the total fraud in the Tampa area alone could approach $1 billion.

The state agency's Inspector General delved into the Tampa Bay agency's expenditures in November 2009 following an 8 On Your Side investigation that revealed the local nonprofit spent thousands of taxpayer money on food, parties and entertainment. The Tampa Bay agency receives millions of federal dollars to help the jobless find work and retrain the unemployed for new positions. The inspector general's investigation found the alliance spent $147,000 on unallowable expenses.

ITEM It turns out that President Obama has an uncle, Onyango Obama. Onyango is an illegal alien who is a deportation fugitive. A liquor store employee who crashed into a police car, was arrested for DUI, and has been living for decades in Boston, Onyango becomes the latest problem for those who care about such things (which naturally depends upon political party affiliation). Known as Omar, the uncle lost a court challenge to stay in the United States in 1989 and again in 1992. Like an estimated 500,000 to one million illegal aliens, Omar simply blended into the woodwork. Omar's sister, Zeituni (the President's aunt) is also an illegal who was ordered back to Kenya; however, she has evaded deportation through well financed legal representation.  Uncle Omar is now also being represented by the same legal team.  Besides being an illegal alien, thousands of dollars in unpaid Social Security, federal and state income taxes, and other fees are owed for employment and purchases over the nearly three decades. After ten years of being told to "report it if you see something unusual to local law enforcement or the Department of Homeland Security, isn't it interesting that the White House has a blind eye and no comment regarding Uncle Omar and Aunt Zeituni. But alas, as is often the case in Washington with the Modern Tories: Do as I say, not as I do.
